What the record shows

The Mastercoin sale collected approximately USD 5 million worth of Bitcoin sent to a published address on the Bitcointalk forum. Its protocol layer was later renamed Omni and became the foundation for the first version of Tether. The project is now inactive, though its technical contribution endured.

Era context: the genesis years (2013–2016)

The 2013-2016 period marked cryptocurrency's first token sale era. Mastercoin's forum-based sale demonstrated the fundraising model, while Ethereum's 2014 sale would later provide the dominant platform for such offerings. These early experiments established patterns before The DAO incident in 2016 revealed critical vulnerabilities in smart contract systems.
