What the record shows

The project raised USD 160 million worth of ETH during its sale. Shortly after, a vulnerability in its code was exploited, leading to significant losses. This event prompted Ethereum developers to implement a hard fork, creating two separate chains - ETH and ETC. The U.S. securities watchdog later examined whether such tokens qualified as securities.

Era context: the genesis years (2013–2016)

This sale occurred during the Genesis Years when blockchain projects were first experimenting with token sales. Ethereum's 2014 sale had demonstrated the viability of funding development through this method. The DAO's failure highlighted critical security challenges in smart contract implementations.
